What is FHAM?
Fair Housing Alliance of Massachusetts (FHAM) is a consortium of four non-profit organizations working to end voucher-based and other forms of housing discrimination through legal services and education. The consortium consists of Community Legal Aid, the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center, SouthCoast Fair Housing, and the Suffolk University Housing Discrimination Testing Program.
FHAM is proud to be funded by the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities' Fair Housing Initiative, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other sources.
FHAM advocates for housing choice and equity for individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth.
Fair Housing Laws
State and federal laws prohibit discrimination in the sale and rental of housing. This applies to the conduct of property owners, landlords, property managers, mortgage lenders, real estate agents, and other housing providers.
These laws make it unlawful to discriminate based on: using a housing voucher or receiving other public assistance, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, ancestry, genetic information, marital status, veteran or active military status, age, and familial status (i.e., children or pregnant people).
